PenFed joins National Defense University in honoring CIA
NDU gala pays tribute to men and women of the CIA
TYSONS, VA (November 13, 2015) — PenFed Credit Union senior executives and members of the board of directors joined the National Defense University Foundation for its annual American Patriot Award gala in Washington, D.C., recently. This year’s event honored the men and women of the Central Intelligence Agency, and drew more than 500 diplomatic, military, government and civilian guests. The NDU Foundation American Patriot Award recognizes exceptional leaders who dedicate their lives to enhancing human security and global stability.
“The quiet, often unseen work done by the men and women of the CIA may not always be the stuff of spy novels, but the agency’s role in national and global security is larger than life,” said Ed Cody, chairman of the board at PenFed Credit Union. “We were very pleased to join our partners at the NDU Foundation in honoring this special group of American patriots.”
CIA Director John O. Brennan accepted the award on behalf of those who serve in the Agency. The shared history between the National Defense University and the CIA’s service reaches back nearly 70 years to the National War College tenure of pioneering intelligence analyst Sherman Kent. The doctrine and partnerships Kent helped establish in 1947—between intelligence officers, diplomats and military leaders—set in motion a legacy of joint military, interagency and multinational cooperation.
“PenFed is proud to support the NDU Foundation in its many important endeavors,” said Angela Patel, senior vice president at PenFed Credit Union and a member of the NDU Foundation board of directors. “We have a common mission, rooted in the support of our nation’s defenders, and a common goal—recognition of their countless sacrifices and accomplishments. How very appropriate; to honor the men and women of the CIA with the American Patriot Award at yet another spectacular event.”
Tribute speakers honoring the award recipients included Sir Peter Westmacott, KCMG, LVO, British Ambassador to the United States; the Honorable Lisa O. Monaco, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism; and the Honorable Doctor Michael Vickers, former Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence.
Recent past recipients of the American Patriot Award include the men and women of the National Guard; Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton; the men and women of Special Operations Command; and Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman.
