Philadelphia, PA, January 23, 2012- Philadelphia Federal Credit Union is proud to announce a donation of $5,000 to the expansion of West Philadelphia’s Mariposa Food Co-op.

The donation will be used to support Mariposa’s Revolving Equity Fund, a donated pool of capital dedicated to increasing food access in the neighborhood. Mariposa Food Co-op will use the Revolving Equity Fund to subsidize the $200 member capital requirement, offering the benefits of co-op membership to those who cannot otherwise afford it.

Both Mariposa and PFCU are member-owned institutions and supporters of the community, particularly West Philadelphia, home to PFCU’s LEED-Silver certified branch at 5000 Baltimore Avenue and both the current and future sites of Mariposa.  The food co-op is only weeks away from opening its new, larger location at 4824 Baltimore Avenue, which will operate as a fully operational grocery store, allowing more residents to reap the benefits of co-ops.

“With our parallel organizational structures and interests in the community, it seemed like a natural fit for PFCU to support Mariposa,” said PFCU President/CEO James McAneney. “We’re glad to know that our donation will help fund the member capital requirement, eliminating the financial barriers for some residents that would prevent them from joining.”

Mariposa provides the West Philadelphia community and beyond with access to and information about food, especially healthy, locally-grown or otherwise sustainably-produced products. For comments or information from Mariposa please contact Leah Pillsbury, Capital Campaign Coordinator, at leahpillsbury@gmail.com or 215-531-2232.
