Principal puckers up and secures grant for personal finance resources
FORT WASHINGTON, PA (March 8, 2017) — Sixth grade students at E.T. Richardson Middle School in Springfield, Delaware County, are enjoying new resources in their personal finance classes thanks to Principal Daniel Tracy kissing a pig at TruMark Financial® Credit Union’s Kiss-A-Pig Financial Literacy Fundraiser. Some of the new resources include Budget: Real World Math, a budgeting game, and “The Lemonade War,” a book that illustrates even a small business like a lemonade stand requires good math and budgeting skills.
The budgeting game teaches money management skills, the importance of saving, and making informed decisions. “The Lemonade War” depicts a brother and sister who each open a lemonade stand business. During the process, they learn that it’s not so easy to operate one’s own business. They soon realize they have to keep track of the money, be cautious not to overspend on purchases, and the consequences of drinking their inventory.
The school secured donations to support Tracey’s encounter with the pig at TruMark Financial’s fundraiser which was held on Sept. 28, at the Abington Art Center in Jenkintown. In 2016, TruMark Financial raised $78,000 through Building Financial Futures, its financial literacy initiative, and awarded E. T. Richardson Middle School and 14 other schools grants of $5,300 for their participation in the fundraiser.
The fundraiser is one component of TruMark Financial’s Building Financial Futures initiative which heightens awareness for financial literacy and raises money for schools needing materials to teach money management. In addition to fundraising, credit union employees conduct presentations at local schools on topics such as saving, budgeting, credit, and investing.
The following schools also participated and received a grant:

• Baldi Middle School
