Providence Federal Credit Union CEO wins significant credit union achievement award

PORTLAND, OR (August 16, 2019) — Providence Federal Credit Union (Providence FCU) is thrilled to announce that President and CEO, Shirley Cate has been named the 2019 recipient of the James D. Likens Alumni Recognition Award from the Western CUNA Management School (WCMS). Each year, the WCMS honors one graduate for their significant achievements in the credit union industry.

“Shirley’s leadership and passion for the health care industry and the community has guided her approach and focus as CEO, fostering volunteerism among the credit union’s staff and leadership team,” said Chief Operating Officer, Brett Wooden. “She has committed herself every step of the way to develop a team dedicated to serving the financial needs of our members and keeping the community top of mind.”

Since 1991, the James D. Likens Alumni Recognition Award is awarded to Western CUNA Management School alumni who demonstrate significant professional growth in the individual’s credit union career and significant service to the credit union community. Cate has demonstrated both qualities through her more than 24 years as a dedicated credit union employee.

As a WCMS graduate herself, Cate has also sent multiple employees through the WCMS and has also put three employees through the NWCUA Emerging Leaders Program.

“I’ve never worked for anyone who inspires, motivates, and leads with a level of authenticity like Shirley,” said Tiffany Pillars, AVP of Accounting at Providence FCU. “I have been given so many amazing opportunities over the years, like so many others, because of her emphasis on cultivating and developing the next generation of credit union leaders – I’m thankful for her mentorship every day.”

Cate’s leadership has been paramount in expanding the use of technology within Providence FCU. Her new vision is what helped to create the credit union’s CUSO – CU APPS, which will provide affordable, customizable, mobile technology solutions to credit unions throughout the industry. She also created the credit union’s Care Giver Loan program which helps serve low- and middle-income members facing a financial emergency and helped to increase the match for the Providence St. Joseph Health’s Helping Hands Fund.
