PSECU sponsors Financial Reality Fair for students at Northampton Community College’s Monroe Campus
HARRISBURG, PA (April 13, 2016) — On April 7th, PSECU sponsored a Financial Reality Fair for students at Northampton Community College’s Monroe Campus. The Financial Reality Fair was hosted by Northampton Community College and held in conjunction with the college, PSECU, the Pennsylvania Credit Union Foundation, and State Representatives Rosemary M. Brown, Marcia Hahn and Jack Rader, Jr.
The Financial Reality Fair was an interactive event that gave students a real-life, hands-on simulation of managing finances and personal budgeting. When students registered for the event, they provided information about their chosen major; on the day of the event, they were given a personalized budgeting worksheet based on this information and the real tax information for Monroe County. Students then visited a series of booths to learn about and make choices for living expenses, ranging from entertainment to insurance. Students were encouraged to revisit each booth as many times as needed to end with a balanced budget.
While Financial Reality Fairs have been held for high school students in Monroe County, this is the first Financial Reality Fair to be held for college students. Thirty-four students attended the event. At the conclusion of the event, students were provided with a giveaway bag full of resources to help them as they work toward financial success. “We are privileged to have been able to sponsor this great event. Exposing students to the financial realities they will face after graduation is crucial to their success,” says Barb Bowker, PSECU’s Vice President of Marketing and Membership Development.
