MADISON, WI (June 2, 2014) -- A record 1,000 members attended this year’s Summit Credit Union annual membership meeting, a three-fold increase over previous years. Dubbed “Member Fest,” the inaugural event showcased Summit’s efforts to transform the traditional annual meeting format to a family-friendly festival, complete with picnic fare, music, prizes and kids’ activities such as face painting, balloon animals, tattoos, bounce houses and an obstacle race.
“Over the past two years we’ve been transforming our annual meeting from a traditional meeting to a family-friendly event that celebrates the cooperative difference and engages our members,” said Kim Sponem, president and CEO of Summit Credit Union. “This year’s Member Fest conveyed to our members the cooperative value they build and receive, the impacts we make together, and how much we appreciate them. It was a huge success.”
More than 150 children participated in the obstacle races, which began with a “Diaper Dash” for 0- to 2-year-olds and ended with a “Varsity Chase & Climb” for 11- and 12-year-olds that included inflatable obstacles, a net crawl and climbing wall. Participants chose between three Summit community partner organizations to receive their entry fee for the races. As a result, $1,430 was raised for the American Heart Association, Boys and Girls Club of Dane County and Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS).
More than 75 Summit employees volunteered their time at Member Fest, which was held at Warner Park in Madison on May 18. Planning is already in process for next year’s Member Fest.
