Redwood Credit Union creates miracles on International Credit Union Day

RCU Donates $32,000 to Credit Unions for Kids, Benefiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

SANTA ROSA, CA (October 24, 2013) -- Redwood Credit Union (RCU) celebrated International Credit Union Day, October 17, by helping Members help others in need. Each time RCU Members used their RCU Visa debit or credit card on International Credit Union Day, RCU donated $0.25 to Credit Unions for Kids, which benefits local hospitals belonging to the Children’s Miracle Network, including Children’s Hospital in Oakland. CO-OP Financial Services also matched RCU’s donation up to $10,000 through their Miracle Match program, bringing RCU’s combined total contribution to $32,039. This donation will aid local children who need care at these specialized children’s hospitals that serve the North Bay and San Francisco.

RCU promoted the donation program through their website, newsletter, local print ads, in-branch signage, email and social media to let Members know that their RCU credit and debit card transactions would make a difference on October 17. The credit union saw a 38% increase in Member card transactions over their projected total for that date.

“International Credit Union Day is an opportunity to thank our 230,000 Members for their business, and to raise general awareness of the many benefits credit unions offer our communities, including access to affordable financial services and free financial education,” said RCU President & CEO Brett Martinez. “It’s heartwarming to see how much was raised in just one day to benefit Credit Unions for Kids,” Martinez added.

Since 1948, credit unions around the globe have celebrated International Credit Union Day on the third Thursday of October. It’s a day to celebrate the “for people, not profit” financial cooperative model; to recognize the achievement of helping millions of people gain access to truly affordable financial services; and it’s a day to show heartfelt appreciation for credit union members.
