Santa Rosa, CA – Redwood Credit Union (RCU) will take its International Credit Union Day celebration to the streets by performing a series of good deeds in the communities it serves. On Thursday, October 21, volunteers from RCU will be appearing unannounced throughout the North Bay and San Francisco to make good things happen for people in their communities. Planned activities include bagging groceries with free eco-totes at select supermarkets, handing out free lunches in the community, distributing free school supplies at local colleges and paying parking fees for unsuspecting drivers. They will also feature contests for kids and teens, including a coloring contest for ages 12 and under.

Fueled by their loyal membership of 150,000 and inspired by the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” RCU is embracing International Credit Union Day as an opportunity to share the credit union experience with their local communities.

“International Credit Union Day is an opportunity to thank our Members for their business, and to raise general awareness of the many benefits credit unions offer our communities, including access to affordable financial services and free financial education,” said RCU President & CEO Brett Martinez. “Credit unions continue to be safe and sound, and remain committed to serving and investing in our local communities,” Martinez added.

Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been celebrated every year on the third Thursday of October. This year’s theme – Local. Trusted. Serving You. – promotes the primary reasons why 184 million people worldwide choose credit unions to access fair and affordable financial services, particularly in difficult economic times. Credit unions are focused on service not profit, and return revenues to their Members through affordable loans, fewer and lower fees, and higher savings yields.
