Santa Rosa, CA (May 9, 2025) |
A crucial step in protecting against fraud and identity theft is to securely dispose of sensitive documents and electronic waste (e-waste). Redwood Credit Union (RCU) offers North Bay residents the opportunity to do this for free at the credit union’s annual Shred-a-Thon events held throughout the North Bay.
“Our Shred-a-Thons are a commitment to both our communities and our planet,” says President and CEO Brett Martinez. "By continuing to help people securely dispose of sensitive documents, we’re protecting them from fraud and identity theft, while also promoting environmental sustainability.”
RCU will host five Shred-a-Thons at the following locations and dates:
- Lake County - Saturday, June 7, 9 a.m. to noon
Lower Lake High School, 9430 Lake Street in Lower Lake
Monetary donations will be accepted at the event to benefit the Lake County Child Care Planning Council, a group committed to ensuring the availability and accessibility of high-quality childcare for the families and children of the community. - Marin County - Saturday, June 28, 9 a.m. to noon
Sutter Novato Community Hospital parking lot at 100 Rowland Way in Novato
Monetary donations will be accepted at the event to benefit SchoolsRule Marin, a coalition of 20 public school district foundations that help fund literacy, technology, health, and arts programs for every public school student in Marin County. - Mendocino County - Saturday, July 12, 9 a.m. to noon
RCU’s Ukiah branch at 195 S. Orchard Ave in Ukiah
Monetary donations will be accepted at the event to benefit Plowshares, a community-funded nonprofit located in Ukiah that provides hot nutritious meals and resources to those in need in inland Mendocino County. - Sonoma County - Saturday, July 26, 9 a.m. to noon
RCU’s administrative offices at 3033 Cleveland Avenue in Santa Rosa
Nonperishable food and monetary donations will be accepted at the event to benefit Redwood Empire Food Bank, a Northern California nonprofit committed to making adequate nutrition available and accessible to those who need it. - Napa County - Saturday, August 16, 9 a.m. to noon
RCU Napa branch and campus at 480 Devlin Road in Napa
*Note: no e-waste is collected at this event.
Monetary donations will be accepted at the event to benefit Puertas Abiertas Community Resource Center, a nonprofit that works hand in hand with Napa’s Latino community to inspire healthy lifestyles, self-sufficiency, and opportunities for leadership and community engagement.
Attendees may bring up to three standard-sized boxes (15”x12”x10”) of confidential documents for shredding, such as old financial statements, canceled checks, and credit card offers. Conservation Corps North Bay will also be on site to collect and recycle e-waste such as old computers, printers, cell phones, and personal electronics. Document shredding is provided by Shred-It, and electronic waste collection by Conservation Corps North Bay.
In 2024, more than 3,000 residents in Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, and Sonoma counties attended RCU Shred-a-Thons. Shred-It trucks helped communities dispose of 134,280 lbs. of documents, while Conservation Corps collected 25,383 lbs. of e-waste. To put it in perspective, the shredded paper alone has an environmental impact equal to conserving 1,145 trees (over 10 acres) and 469,980 gallons of water (enough to water 7,580 lawns for a week).
