Remembering the legacy of Bill Broxterman

Credit union movement visionary and former Leagues President and CEO

ONTARIO, CA (July 31, 2023) — It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of a beloved member of our credit union community, Bill Broxterman, on July 30, 2023. Bill’s dedication and contributions to the credit union movement were immeasurable, and his passing leaves behind a void that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bill’s journey in the credit union industry began in 1954 when he joined the Tennessee Credit Union League. Over the years, he played a pivotal role in organizing numerous credit unions, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals and their communities. His passion for credit unions extended far beyond his professional life, as he worked tirelessly to promote the ideals and values of the cooperative movement.

Bill’s career took him across the country, from Tennessee to Texas to South Carolina, and eventually to California. He was a trailblazer, advocating for credit unions in every role he took on, eventually becoming the President and CEO of the California Credit Union League in 1974. Under his leadership, the League saw tremendous growth in affiliation and established critical services for its members.

Bill’s influence extended beyond the state level and far into the national level, previously serving as Executive Vice President of the Credit Union National Association in Washington, D.C. During his tenure, he initiated the now- renowned annual Governmental Affairs Conference and founded the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC), further cementing credit unions’; visibility and influence on Capitol Hill.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was a mentor and inspiration to many in the credit union community. His willingness to face challenges head-on, even in the face of adversity, speaks volumes about his character and determination. Bill was not only a credit union professional but also a compassionate and caring individual who always put his family first.

As he retired, Bill shifted his focus to his family, cherishing the time spent with his wife, Diane, children, and grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and his commitment to his loved ones served as a beacon of love and strength.

“While we mourn the loss of this remarkable individual, we also celebrate his legacy, one filled with passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the credit union movement,” said Diana Dykstra, president and CEO of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues. “The impact he made on the lives of credit union members and the industry as a whole will continue to resonate for generations to come.”

In these difficult times, let us remember and honor Bill’s contributions to our community, drawing strength from the knowledge that his legacy lives on in the values we uphold and the work we do each day.
