Reno, NV-based credit union continues scholarship program

Great Basin Federal Credit Union (GBFCU) is celebrating its 14th year of offering scholarships to credit union members continuing their education.

The $5,000 in scholarship funds is offered annually. GBFCU’s scholarship can be used towards any post-secondary program, including community colleges and trade schools. Eligible applicants may be seniors in high school entering college or undergraduate and graduate school students. They also must be members of the Reno, NV-based credit union who have shown a passion for their subject of study and history of community service and leadership.

“We encourage applicants to show us what they’re passionate about and what service they do in the community. Those values have always been important to us as a credit union, and they make a positive impact on the entire community” says Great Basin Federal Credit Union Chief Experience Officer Elisabeth Hadler.

The scholarship has enabled students to build careers without accruing significant amounts of student debt. Previous scholarship winner, Leah Chirico, notes: “Earning this scholarship in 2012 made a big difference to help me stay out of debt while studying to become a nurse. I love that my credit union gives back to the community in this way, and I plan to pay it forward in giving back to my community too.”

Great Basin FCU also empowers students in the Reno and Sparks area through activities with its Youth Focus Committee. The committee helps educates high school students on finances including credit, accounts, and loans.
