Ringing in the new year by giving: DCECU collecting canned goods, toiletries for local pantries in second annual donation drive
MIDLAND, MI (January 9, 2019) — For the second consecutive year, Dow Chemical Employees’ Credit Union (dcecu.org) is working to help ensure that local families start off the new year with stocked cabinets. From mid-January through mid-February, DCECU is collecting food and personal care items to be divided among organizations in Bay, Midland, Saginaw and Gladwin counties that distribute resources to community members.
“We decided last year that we wanted to initiate a beginning-of-the-year donation drive to help local families keep food on the table and personal-care necessities in the bathroom cabinet,” said DCECU Executive Assistant to the CEO Susan Phillips, who started the drive in 2018 and is organizing it again this year. “The generous response from the community was astounding, and we ended up collecting more than 2,500 items.”
Saginaw-based nonprofit Hidden Harvest is providing DCECU with boxes for the collection of items. At the conclusion of the donation drive, Hidden Harvest will retrieve donations from DCECU for transport to Midland’s Open Door, Good Samaritan Rescue Mission in Bay City, Helping Hands Mission in Beaverton and the Ecumenical Food Pantry in Saginaw, which will distribute the items to community members.
While each week of the five-week drive features specific items that are being sought, all donations are welcomed. Contributions can be dropped off at the greeter desk at the credit union, which is located at 600 E. Lyon Rd. in Midland.
The weekly schedule of featured items for collection is as follows:
- Week of Jan. 14: Canned green beans; shampoo; facial tissue
- Week of Jan. 21: Canned baked beans; toothpaste; personal hygiene items
- Week of Jan. 28: Canned corn; toilet paper
- Week of Feb. 4: Canned soups and stews; toothbrushes
- Week of Feb. 11: Canned meats (e.g., tuna, corned beef, chicken, etc.); stick deodorant
