Vongsawad and his wife Jamie have been married for 33 years and are parents to three sons. The oldest, age 31, is an attorney, the second, age 30, is a financial advisor, and the youngest, age 27, a high school physics teacher.  Vongsawad was also influential in the life of his nephew, the only child of his deceased brother. Vongsawad learned of the loss of his brother, who passed at age 24 from a brain aneurysm, while serving during a two-year mission in the Fiji Islands. His nephew, who works today as a financial advisor, is married with three children. His three sons and nephew have each earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.

“As a proud father, I am incredibly honored to receive this award. Being a father has impacted my life in so many ways and I am the person I am today because of my children and my nephew—they are my heroes,” said Vongsawad.

Vongsawad began working at SDCCU in 2000 and has served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) since 2008. His career in banking spans 29 years, serving several leading financial institutions in various leadership roles, including senior vice president, executive vice president, interim chief executive officer (CEO) and CEO. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Irvine and is a graduate of Pacific Coast Banking School.

Two other local fathers will be honored at the ADA’s 13th annual Father of the Year awards dinner. They include Jeffrey Martin, CEO, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Tracy Sundlun, senior VP of global events, Competitor Group.

The purpose of the “Father of the Year” awards program is to recognize men who have made family a priority while balancing demanding careers and community involvement. Every year, the Father’s Day Council in each city throughout the country conducts a nomination process to identify honorees who meet the criteria to be nominated as Father of the Year. Honoring men who are seen as leaders in the community helps elevate the Father’s Day Council’s goal of heightening awareness of the importance of fatherhood, while raising money for a good cause.

“I am so appreciative of the Father’s Day Council and American Diabetes Association for selecting me as a 2016 ‘Father of the Year.’ I have learned so much over the past few months in working with the ADA and it has been a very rewarding experience,” said Vongsawad.

Proceeds raised from the event will benefit the ADA and its mission to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
