San Diego County Credit Union returns as sponsor of Countywide Spelling Bee

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 17, 2016) — San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, returned for the tenth consecutive year as a sponsor of the 47th annual San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee, presented in collaboration with the San Diego County Office of Education.
This year’s Spelling Bee was held from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.
The Countywide Spelling Bee is open to 7th- and 8th-grade students in public or private schools with a combined enrollment of 30 or more children. Congratulations to Ella Peters of Notre Dame Academy for beating over 100 competitors and becoming this year’s champion. She correctly spelled the word “phlegm.”
As the winner, she is awarded the title of Spelling Bee Champion, and with her chaperone, won an all-expenses-paid trip to the Washington, D.C. area to compete in the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition held in May 2016.

Last year’s San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee began with 102 students and ended with one champion, Oona Flood, a student at Earl Warren Middle School in Solana Beach, Calif. San Diego has a history of making a strong showing at the national level. Francis Parker School’s Snigdha Nandipati won the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and Anurag Kashyap, who attended Meadowbrook Middle School in the Poway Unified School District, was the 2005 national champion. Nandipati was the countywide champion in both 2011 and 2012.
