San Francisco, Calif. (July 5, 2011) – The management and staff at San Francisco Federal Credit helped clean up nearby playgrounds in partnership with the San Francisco Neighborhood Parks Council.
The Neighborhood Parks Council (NPC) and the Recreation and Park Department (RPD) survey public playgrounds every two years for safety and maintenance as part of the NPC Playground Initiative. Out of the 125 San Francisco playgrounds assessed, 46 playgrounds received a C, D, or F grade. In 2010, the Buchanan Street Mall Playgrounds in San Francisco’s Western Addition received “C” grades and were identified as needing major repairs.
Over two mornings in June, 51 San Francisco Federal Credit Union volunteers revitalized these neighborhood playgrounds. Managers on June 9th and staff on June 30th gathered at the Buchanan Street Mall Playgrounds for a few hours in the morning to sift sand, trim bushes and remove weeds and dead leaves from the sand and surrounding flower beds.
“The Playground Initiative’s goal is to have 10 workdays at C or D playgrounds throughout summer to improve the grades and give children a place to play. With the Credit Union’s help, NPC was able to target two C-grade sites in need of basic repairs and cleaning to ensure children’s safety,” said Anita Chordia, development associate at Neighborhood Parks Council. “Since the San Francisco FCU volunteers came to the two playgrounds at Buchanan Street Mall, the RPD staff became even more motivated to paint the play structure and mow the surrounding grass areas!”
San Francisco Neighborhood Parks Council advocates for a superior, equitable and sustainable park and recreation system. NPC provides leadership and support to park users through community-driven stewardship, education, planning and research. Since 1996, Neighborhood Parks Council has established itself as San Francisco’s premier park advocacy authority, representing more than 100 park groups, over 50 strategic partner organizations, and 4,000+ park volunteers.
