In response to the COVID-19 public health emergency Olivia Sze, a thirteen-year-old philanthropist, raised $1,085 to help her community through her Hidden Treasures Fundraiser. SMCU President and CEO Wade Painter and San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine were on hand to facilitate the donation.
Motivated by what she witnessed daily on the news, Sze saw countless lives impacted greatly by the current pandemic and she wanted to use her resources to help.
“Knowing that I might help one of these neighbors pay their rent, or get some groceries, or simply support them in any way is one of the most amazing feelings,” said Sze.
SMCU was honored to accept the donation at the San Mateo Branch as well as add $500 to her efforts to increase the impact of her donation to SMC Strong. “All of us at SMCU are so inspired by Olivia’s passion and enthusiasm for our community,” SMCU President and CEO, Wade Painter says. “It is because of the hard work and dedication of people in our community, like Olivia, that we are truly SMC Strong.”
“Countless San Mateo County residents are struggling due to this unprecedented pandemic,” said Supervisor Dave Pine. “It is impressive to see a young person in our community both recognize the need and then take the initiative to do something about it. I am very grateful to both Olivia Sze and the San Mateo County Credit Union for their donations and concern for those in our community who are struggling.”
SMCU has partnered with San Mateo County Strong to administer grants for many relief efforts as well as provide community resources through its SMCU Community Fund. This crisis is far from over, however, and SMCU will continue to monitor the situation, fundraise for our community and take care of its members and the communities it serves. With residents with an enthusiasm for our community, like Sze, there is so much hope for our future.
