SDCCU is the current Guinness World Record® holder for the most paper collected in 24-hours
A total of 33,640 pounds of paper collected, and over 280 trees saved at latest SDCCU Shred Day event
SAN DIEGO, CA (December 11, 2015) — San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is committed to helping the community properly dispose of sensitive data, an effort that landed them their third Guinness World Record for the most paper collected in 24 hours last July. SDCCU’s latest free Shred Day Event, held at three locations on November 7, resulted in a total of 33,640 pounds of paper collected and shredded.
“The proper disposal of confidential, personal information is more important than ever, and providing this free service allows SDCCU to help protect our customers and the community at large to minimize the risk of identity theft.” said Teresa Halleck, SDCCU president and CEO. “SDCCU is committed to helping our community go green through these efforts—and by offering secure paperless banking services such as eStatements and eReceipts.”
SDCCU began hosting its free Shred Day Events in 2007 and has since collected, shredded and recycled more than 1.8 million pounds of paper (or over 913 tons) at no charge, saving over 15,800 trees (roughly 120 pounds shredded represents one saved tree). The events have also saved the community over $200,000 in costs associated with shredding documents. In 2014, SDCCU was the first financial institution to be named a Live Well San Diego partner for its efforts in helping to create a safer San Diego by providing free shredding services to the community.
