SECU Assists FBLA/DECA and Hosts “The Reality of Money” Workshop

RALEIGH, NC (May 14, 2013) Supporting North Carolina’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) staff and member volunteers recently helped over 3,900 middle and high school students assess their competencies in marketing, entrepreneurship, career development, and leadership.  In addition to serving as competition judges at both events, SECU representatives also hosted a one-day financial education workshop for FBLA students, “The Reality of Money,” a project of the North Carolina Credit Union Development Educators (NC CUDE).

Over 120 SECU representatives assisted with the two conferences, including Greensboro-New Garden Road branch Advisory Board member and first State FBLA President, Bobbie Avent Brown.  Roy Allen of SECU’s Archdale Advisory Board was on hand as well, serving as an FBLA volunteer organizer.  On behalf of FBLA he stated, “The continued support of SECU is appreciated by all of us in the organization, and we want to thank the Credit Union for enhancing the FBLA conference experience by teaching positive financial lessons to North Carolina’s youth.”

The interactive workshop “The Reality of Money” brought more than 90 FBLA students together for a financial simulation exercise designed to help prepare today’s youth for the financial realities and challenges they will face as they move from high school years into post high school education and/or the workforce.

Jimmy Goodrum, SECU Senior Vice President of Member Education and Outreach served as SECU conference coordinator.  He remarked, “SECU is pleased to assist both FBLA and DECA by serving as competition judges.  ‘The Reality of Money’ workshop introduction during the FBLA conference also provided an opportunity for SECU representatives to work with the NC Credit Union League and NC CUDE in promoting financial literacy.”
