Raleigh, NC, May 29 – State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) recently reached yet another record-breaking milestone in its fundraising efforts for March of Dimes, raising nearly $70,000 for the charity. In 2011, Credit Union staff raised an impressive $59,000, but found a way to beat that figure by more than $10,000 in 2012. Throughout the year, Triangle area branches and operations departments held various fundraisers for the cause, and in late April, 200 SECU team members showed their support by walking in the area March for Babies®.
Credit Union personnel take their fundraising seriously and are quite competitive among branches and operations teams, all striving to the be top money-collectors for the overall SECU Team. Along with that competitive spirit comes great creativity, and many fun events were held to raise funds for March of Dimes, including a cornhole tournament, a Zumba® Fitness Jam, and a “Wig Out the SVP” contest. Food events were also popular, with flapjacks, barbeque, hot dogs and baked spaghetti on this year’s menu.
SECU’s Cary-Walnut Street branch employees collected over $4,500 for March of Dimes, and were the creators of the “Wig Out the SVP” contest. Cary’s SECU Senior Vice President Fred Cobb agreed to don a wig if the branch raised $4,000. The branch accomplished their goal and Mr. Cobb followed through with his fashion commitment! He remarked, “I made a bold fundraising challenge to Cary-Walnut Street branch employees and they showed they were definitely up for the task and then some! I am so proud of our team for their hard work. They left me with no choice but to sport a not-so-fashionable long flowing wig in support of the babies!”
“SECU is a great example of what a team can accomplish. They established a goal, developed a plan and then harnessed their passion for the cause. We are so thankful for their support and for being a champion for babies,” said Tiffany Wise Layden, State Director of the North Carolina Chapter of March of Dimes. “SECU continues to prove how important moms and babies are to their organization and to the team of individuals who work there. Their dedication and passion are so appreciated by the March of Dimes and the thousands of volunteers in this area.”
