SECU Celebrates 75 Years of Service at Annual Membership Meeting

Raleigh, NC – With 1,150 member-owners in attendance, State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) recently capped its 75th Anniversary with an event-filled Annual Membership Meeting, which included a volunteer luncheon and educational sessions, testimonial video tributes and member recognitions.  The meeting emphasized SECU’s “People Helping People” philosophy and “Do the Right Thing” mentality on which the Credit Union was founded in 1937 with just 17 members and $437 in deposits.  Still operating with those same principles, SECU is currently the second largest credit union in the United States with nearly 1.8 million members and $25 billion in assets!

Held at the Sheraton Hotel at Four Seasons in Greensboro, NC, the 2012 Meeting began with a volunteer luncheon, featuring guest speaker Tom Glatt, Sr., Managing Principal of Centellect Consulting, LLC who applauded the member-owner service mentality of attendees.  A series of informative educational sessions preceded the afternoon’s general business session which included several tribute videos, including a video highlighting the cooperatives’ past 75 years and the celebration of its future as told through member testimonials.  Another video introduced by SECU Foundation Board Chair Jim Barber featured fiscal year 2012 SECU Foundation projects and included a montage of thank-you messages from “People Helping People” scholarship winners.

McKinley Wooten, Chairman of SECU’s Board of Directors, presided over the meeting.  Addressing the crowd, he stated, “In the last 75 years, SECU has remained steadfast in its mission of improving the economic lives of members and today is still providing North Carolina’s State and Public School employees and their families with affordable financial services, still treating members equally, and still operating with the same philosophy and mentality on which it was founded.  You, the member-owners, are the sole reason that SECU has experienced growth in each of it 75 years and the reason your cooperative remains financially strong.”
