Raleigh, N.C., February 20 – State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) has “changed” how some North Carolina charities convert their donated coin, resulting in big benefits for the local non-profits.  In 2005, SECU installed no-fee coin sorters for use by members in each of its branches, which now total 240 locations statewide.  As an extension of its community service efforts, SECU allows local non-profit charitable groups to benefit as well, with many utilizing SECU coin sorters to count large volumes of change collected during fundraising drives.  To date, SECU machines have sorted over $1 million in coin, saving these groups approximately $75,000 in fees!

One organization that has benefited from SECU’s coin sorter service is the North Carolina Zoo Society.  The Society’s External Affairs Manager, John Payne, comments, “We receive contributions in many forms, one of which is coin drives from children.  SECU’s FAT CAT coin sorters make it so easy and convenient for us to convert the coin, taking a multi-hour staff process down to an hour or less.  It’s a huge benefit, saving time and precious donor dollars.”

The SECU coin sorters feature a FAT CAT theme to highlight the Credit Union’s youth program, which encourages saving at an early age; however, sorters are popular with members of all ages and provide a valuable service that translates into big savings for all who utilize the machines.

Jennifer Hamrick, Senior Vice President of SECU’s Support Services department adds, “State Employees’ Credit Union is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of its members and the citizens of North Carolina through financial services and community-based efforts.  FAT CAT coin sorters allow SECU to expand those community efforts and help fundraising dollars make an even larger positive impact on our State.”
