SECU continues tradition in support of March of Dimes raising nearly $53,000 for babies

RALEIGH, NC (June 12, 2015) — Walking in someone else’s shoes can be a difficult feat, but walking for someone through a worthy cause like the March of Dimes® March for Babies® fundraiser is much easier, and one that has been an annual tradition of State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) staff members for decades.

Over 180 SECU employees, family members and friends recently joined thousands of other March of Dimes supporters for a 3-mile hike, in support of the Triangle area’s March for Babies walk held in Morrisville, North Carolina. Fundraising efforts among local SECU branches and operations departments for the cause were once again successful, raising nearly $53,000 to help provide local programs and lifesaving research for problems that threaten newborns. In addition, SECU branch fundraisers held in other areas across the State have not gone unnoticed, adding several thousand dollars more to the Credit Union’s cumulative support for March of Dimes this year.

“Our 2015 March for Babies event was a huge success. We had more than 4,500 people attend and participate, including State Employees’ Credit Union,” stated Tyler Salisbury, Chairman of the Eastern Carolina Division of March of Dimes. “SECU has consistently been a tremendous asset to our campaign, from their candy bar fundraisers to their huge team presence at our walks. We are so grateful for all that they’ve done and continue to do for stronger, healthier babies.”

Over the years, SECU employees have been known to drum up a few entertaining events to show their creativity and competitive fundraising spirit, vying for the spot as the top SECU fundraising team. This year, Raleigh’s Contact Center employees earned the number one spot led by co-captains Kevin Rose, Meg Aull and Irma Coppola Isleem. Their combined efforts raised more than $4,500 through several events, including FAT CAT Candygrams on Valentine’s Day, a basketball tournament, a chili cook-off and a Pie in the Face bidding contest that resulted in nine of their peers wearing a pie for the cause!

Co-captain Irma Coppola Isleem commented, “As a proud aunt of triplet preemies born at 34 weeks and a nephew born at only 24 weeks, the March for Babies campaign has an extra special place in my heart. This fundraiser was a wonderful opportunity for SECU employees to give back to an organization that saves the lives of so many babies! Coming together and completing the 3-mile walk, even under the threat of rain, showed such comradery and dedication. I’m so proud to be part of such a wonderful organization!”
