State Employees’ Credit Union encourages North Carolina citizens to vote
RALEIGH, NC (July 18, 2016) — State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) is not a political organization with any partisan affiliation. It’s a North Carolina-based not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by members – more than two million strong – who each have a vote in how their credit union is governed. Americans also have a right to vote for our nation’s governing body with that same fervor. Therefore, SECU, via a formal public service announcement, is encouraging citizens to embrace their freedom to shape the future by registering to vote and exercising their right in the upcoming election.
The announcement is scheduled to run the week of July 18th in North Carolina’s hometown and community newspapers statewide. Encouraging voter registration is not new to SECU; the Credit Union has partnered on various occasions with the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) to provide registration information to members. With another important election quickly approaching, SECU planned its announcement for summer, giving voters ample time to register through NCSBE.
“I’ve said many times throughout my career to ‘Do the Right Thing,’” says SECU’s longtime President/CEO Jim Blaine. “I generally say that in relation to our Credit Union responsibility to member-owners, but I also think it’s very applicable to all of us as citizens. Many people have fought and struggled hard for the Constitutional freedoms enjoyed by all Americans. How you vote is of course important, but we are emphasizing that all citizens need to vote – it’s an honor and a privilege and everyone should share the responsibility by doing their part. Don’t wait, register now.”
