SECU youth “Spiced up their Savings” with nearly $5.7 million in deposits during saving challenge!

RALEIGH, NC (May 3, 2019) — State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) recently cooked up a fabulous opportunity for its young members to learn about saving and managing money during SECU’s Youth Saving Challenge, “Spice Up Your Savings!” Over 26,350 youth participated, showing their appetite for saving by opening 1,074 new youth accounts and depositing nearly $5.7 million!

The Credit Union holds a saving challenge annually in conjunction with Financial Literacy Month, providing an excellent backdrop for SECU staff to help North Carolina’s youth develop healthy financial habits and save for their future. This year, participants who made a deposit during the week of April 22nd – 26th were automatically entered in a random drawing for one FAT CAT member (up to age 12) and one Zard member (ages 13 – 19) to win an Apple iPad and a $25 iTunes gift card. Members of all ages enjoyed the Savings Challenge cooking theme and activities planned by their local branches, including branch tours, presentations, and member appreciation events with special appearances made by SECU’s youth mascot, FAT CAT. The Credit Union also held a member drawing at each branch statewide, with 265 lucky winners receiving a cake decorating kit and apron.

During Financial Literacy Month and throughout the year, SECU uses a variety of programs and works with families, schools, and community groups to provide financial education. State Employees’ Credit Union currently serves nearly 269,000 FAT CAT and Zard members with over $224.7 million in savings.

“This year’s “Spice Up Your Savings!” challenge theme was a fun way to educate youth, giving them the opportunity to ask questions about money and finances while encouraging them to increase their savings,” said Dayla Dawson, Vice President of SECU’s Grantsboro office. “Our employees really enjoyed decorating the branch to show them how exciting it can be to make your ‘dough’ grow!”

Winners of the Apple iPads and iTunes gift cards will be published on SECU youth websites, www.cufatcats.org and www.teenzard.org, as well as in the FAT CAT Paw Prints and Zard Money Matterz newsletters upon official member confirmation.
