Security Service Charitable Foundation making treatment possible for Leukemia and Lymphoma patients
$5,000 donation to help with patient travel costs
SAN ANTONIO, TX (August 10, 2015) — For many cancer patients, undergoing treatment isn’t the only hardship they face. Getting to the clinic or hospital for care can be an extreme burden. That’s why the Security Service Federal Credit Union Charitable Foundation donated $5,000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Central Texas (LLS) to help with patient travel costs.
“Unfortunately, some patients live out of town and the cost of making multiple trips to the hospital or clinic can be overwhelming,” said Brandy Ralston-Lint, senior vice president of corporate communications for Security Service. “We hope the charitable foundation’s contribution will help ease the stress on patients and their families so they can focus on getting the care they need.”
Oncologists rely heavily on organizations like LLS to provide assistance to patients for travel costs. LLS, whose mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, began its travel program in March 2014 to pay for costs associated with travel. Those cost include everything from mileage, parking, tolls, gasoline, even temporary housing.
Additionally, there is no federal program to assist families in such a manner. “Serving patients requires local support from generous donors like Security Service’s Charitable Foundation,” said Deborah Barker, executive director of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Central Texas. “Security Service and LLS of South Central Texas have enjoyed a long relationship together for many years, and for that we are grateful.”
The donation is expected to help about 150 patients locally, and hundreds more from out of town.
