DES MOINES, IA (June 17, 2021) — Serve Credit Union, a financial cooperative that serves those who serve the community, recently announced the five recipients of its $5,000 college scholarship program.
Every year, Serve partners with the Des Moines Police Burial Association to offer college scholarships to its members and their families. This year, the following recipients each received a $1,000 scholarship:
Kylee Blad, a current Ohio State University student and the program’s fifth $1,000 scholarship recipient, received the Larry Judkins Scholarship. This award is given to a child of a Des Moines Police Officer in memory of Officer Larry Judkins, who lost his battle with Hodgkin’s disease after 28 years of service.
“Serve is proud to give back to the communities that support us,” said Jami Weems, CEO of Serve. “We love supporting our younger members and helping them reach their educational goals. Partnering with the Des Moines Police Burial Association allows us to provide this wonderful opportunity and truly helps us serve those who serve our community.”
The application process required applicants to include their volunteer history, their future plans, the degree they are pursuing or plan to pursue and an essay on how their views on financial security have changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The scholarship winners will be recognized at the credit union’s downtown branch next Monday and highlighted on social media. Click here to follow along.
