Serve Credit Union celebrates 90 years of serving those who serve our community

Elects new board members at annual meeting

DES MOINES, IA (October 21, 2021) — Serve Credit Union, a financial cooperative that was founded in the “people helping people” spirit in 1931 to serve Des Moines police officers and their families, recently celebrated its 90th anniversary at its annual meeting.

“As a member-owned financial institution, we are proud of the impact our credit union has had on the financial lives of our members and the communities where they live and work during the past 90 years,” said Jami Weems, CEO of Serve. “Since our doors opened, we have served thousands of Iowans, giving us a chance to support those who are so critical to our community.”

Throughout 2021, the credit union staff has celebrated this historic milestone in numerous ways, including an open house event, special birthday product promotions, trivia and throwback photos on social media and sweatshirts with the credit union’s original certificate of the organization.

During the credit union’s recent annual meeting, members re-elected Dave Ness, Eric Hartman and Mike Morgan to serve another three-year term on the board. Members also elected candidate Jamie Xayavong to the board. To see a full list of the board, click here

Serve is one of the oldest credit unions in the state. The credit union was founded with the mission to provide credit and savings to Des Moines police officers and their families at a fair and reasonable rate, to encourage habits of thrift and to provide the opportunity to use and control their savings for their mutual benefit. Over the past few years, Serve has grown to include all public safety professionals including all law enforcement, firefighters, EMTs and corrections officers. Serve also merged with the USDA Credit Union and the Polk County School Employees Credit Union, which allowed the credit union to serve employees from governmental agencies and schools along with their families. In July of 2017, Serve updated its brand and name to Serve Credit Union, and in May of 2018, the credit union opened a brand new branch in Urbandale.

Last year alone, Serve provided $26.8 million in loans to members, which shows the credit union’s dedication to its mission statement of serving those who serve the community.
