St. Helens Community Federal Credit Union (SHCU) awarded two $1000 scholarships to high school graduates from Columbia County. Scholarship applicants were required to complete the online Guides to Independence courses, a free financial education program which teaches high school students about money management. Applicants were also required to submit a 250 to 350 word essay on one of the three following topics: explain the value of credit union membership; explain how SHCU has assisted them or their family; explain how the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” helps our communities.

The volunteer Board of Directors had the difficult task of choosing only two recipients from the eighteen applications received. Lida Means of Scappoose and an undisclosed graduate from St. Helens were selected as the winners for the scholarships.

St. Helens Community Federal Credit Union (SHCU) has been serving Columbia County residents and businesses since 1938.
