The FCU Team (Furthering Community Unity) powered by Shell Federal Credit Union joined the fight against cancer during the night long Relay for Life Event. The Relay for Life Event was held at Deer Park High School’s North Campus track. It began at 7pm on April 30th and went through the night until 7am on May 1st. Participating groups set up their tents, hosted games, sold food and other items – all to raise money to fight against cancer and celebrate with cancer survivors. During the event, over 100 individuals signed pledges to take positive steps to avoid cancer, such as eating healthier and using sunscreen. But, most importantly, participating teams had someone from their team walking the track during the night “in memory” of those who had passed due to cancer and “in honor” of cancer survivors.

For the FCU Team to reach and exceed their donation goal, many hours were spent behind the scenes with a number of fundraising efforts. Shell FCU members contributed cash to lobby canisters. Papa John’s Pizza and Chick-fil-A participated in “Spirit Nights” where a percentage of their sales were donated on behalf of the FCU Team. Shell FCU employees participated in workday events by buying raffle tickets, ice cream sundaes, nachos, baked goods and hosted pancake breakfast for the staff to raise funds.

To all who participated, thank you. Total contributions from the FCU Team powered by Shell FCU reached $3124.50. Next year we hope to set our goal higher and encourage our community partners to join us.

The FCU Team has already volunteered for more than 700 hours in 2010 and participates in numerous events such as Pasadena Habitat for Humanity, walks, runs, park cleanups, blood drives, and much more.
