Sooper Credit Union highlights huge year of community giving

ARVADA, COLO (March 13, 2024) — Sooper Credit Union and its employees gave back to the community through volunteer hours and financial donations in 2023.

The credit union and its partner SCU Community Foundation donated more than $243,000 in financial support to more than 50 local nonprofits and community organizations. In addition, the foundation offers $15,000 in scholarships each year to deserving students.

Sooper offers staff volunteer time off so they can easily give back to their favorite charities and causes. Eighty staff members volunteered 238.5 hours during 2023, supporting nearly 20 events.

Regis University and the Porter-Billups Leadership Academy (PBLA) continue to be a focus for the credit union. The Regis Co-Op offers complimentary assistance to students for weekly food needs. Expanded in January, it now includes a newly added provision of professional clothing attire made possible by Sooper Credit Union. The credit union has long supported Regis, specifically the PBLA program, for over 20 years.

Founded in 1996, PBLA helps at-risk Denver youth graduate from high school and college. Students develop leadership principles throughout the 3-week academy every summer to become influential leaders in their schools and communities. Sooper employees volunteer their time with the students and in the classroom, and Carrie Langgard, Sooper Credit Union President/CEO, serves on the PBLA Advisory Board.

The Christmas season is always a popular time to donate and volunteer. Sooper CU sponsored Mt. St. Vincent’s Project Santa and provided gifts for 62 children. The credit union also held a Hope House gift card donation rally in Arvada, sent six kids to the Aurora Police Association Charitable Foundation’s Shop with a Cop Holiday Event, adopted a family from the Community Partnership for Child Development (CPCD) Head Start in Colorado Springs, and hosted a donation barrel for Grand Valley Catholic Outreach’s annual S.P.U.N.K. (Socks, Pajamas, and Underwear for Needing Kids) drive in Grand Junction.
