South Carolina Federal Credit Union Supports Komen’s Race for the Cure

South Carolina Federal Credit Union Supports
Komen’s Race for the Cure through Social Media

(N. CHARLESTON, S.C.) –October 22, 2010 – South Carolina Federal has been a long time supporter of the Komen Lowcountry annual Race for the Cure.  Each year, South Carolina Federal pays the entry fees of employees to participate on the corporate team.  Breast cancer awareness is something near and dear to many hearts.  In fact, 1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life.  However, with early detection and treatment it’s not a death sentence and hopefully will be another, “remember the time” moment for many women.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and International Credit Union Month, both of which are in October, South Carolina Federal decided to serve the local community by participating yet again in the 2010 Race for the Cure and has committed to several additional ways to raise awareness and support for this year’s race.

President and CEO, Scott Woods, encouraged the membership to donate, participate or volunteer in the October edition of the monthly membership newsletter, inBalance.  The organization weekly segment on Chick FM, 98.9, has devoted spots to breast cancer awareness in the community.  Also, employees are able to forgo the standard brandwear attire and wear a pink shirt with jeans each Friday in the month of October.

Social media has also played a big role in the grass roots effort to promote the Race for the Cure.  The week of October 11 simplecents.org, the corporate blog, was devoted to cancer survivors in the credit union.  South Carolina Federal employees tweeted about breast cancer awareness and employee “pink” days.  On Facebook the credit union committed to donating $1 for each “like” received on the South Carolina Federal page, up to $500, until the day of the race.  On Friday, October 15, the credit union’s Facebook page fan base tallied over 1,000.  In addition to the $500 for Facebook fans, the credit union contributed $2,865.00 toward the employees’ Team Blue, based on a combination of paid Race for the Cure entry fees and donations collected.

The credit union’s goal is to serve its communities,  advocating for this noble cause and joining the fight against breast cancer is just one of many ways community service is demonstrated.
