Summit Credit Union awards local student $2,500 with project Teen Money crown

Annual interactive competition inspires students to manage finances early

MADISON, WI (April 6, 2017) — Summit Credit Union has announced the winner of its 2017 Project Teen Money program, a financial education challenge created by the member-owned cooperative encouraging students to learn about finances. Hadley Nellis, a senior at Madison’s Memorial high school, earned the most points this year and will receive a $2,500 continuing education scholarship from Summit.

“Project Teen Money was created as a fun and interactive way to get students thinking about finances and how they can teach others what they learned,” said Summit Credit Union CEO/President Kim Sponem. “Through videos and social media, it’s exciting to watch teens think through smart spending, consistent saving and giving back to the community.”

Now in its fourth year, Project Teen Money sees two students from Madison’s East, La Follette and Memorial high schools develop videos to inspire peers around the importance of financial savvy. For each video, participants get creative and educate fellow students about the financial topic at hand.

This year, the 30- to 90-second videos were published on Summit’s website from February to March with community members, students’ families and classmates voting for their favorite video. Overall points were awarded for timeliness, accuracy, originality and creativity.

Nellis will begin college this fall at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, where she’ll study film editing. “I’ve always had a passion for creating videos with a positive message and being able to participate in the Project Teen Money program was incredibly gratifying,” said Nellis. “This scholarship from Summit will help me pursue that passion further as I start college this fall.”

In addition to the winner receiving a $2,500 scholarship, all other Project Teen Money participants receive a $500 scholarship from Summit Credit Union. To learn more about Summit’s Project Teen Money program, visit https://www.summitcreditunion.com/project-teen-money/students.html.
