Summit Credit Union helps members spread financial empowerment worldwide

New partnership will bring financial support to international communities

MADISON, WI (December 13, 2016) — Today Summit Credit Union launched its new VISA Global Good Card campaign, developed in partnership with the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU). The card highlights a shared goal of improving member lives and communities through financial empowerment. Summit hopes the new card will bring awareness to WOCCU’s global work and additional support to the organization.

“We have believed and supported the important work the World Council of Credit Unions does to bring access to credit to low-income families and women in emerging countries since its inception, said Summit Credit Union CEO/President Kim Sponem. “The Global Good card was developed by Summit as another way for our members to help members throughout the world become financially self-sustaining.”

For its part, Summit intends to donate up to $10 for every Global Good Card opened through January 31, 2017. Summit Global Good Card members will also have the option to donate $10 annually, while an additional 20 percent of interchange fees on all purchases made with the card will go to WOCCU. The option to redeem rewards points for a cash donation will also be available.

WOCCU largely works with credit unions that have members living on just $2 a day. With The World Bank recently estimating that more than 2 billion people lack access to financial institutions, WOCCU offers credit union members custom financial plans, access to marketplaces and basic money management strategies. *

“We believe granting access to financial resources and tools is extremely empowering for struggling communities, especially in developing areas,” says WOCCU President and Chief Executive Officer Brian Branch. “Summit Credit Union has been an outstanding role model in the credit union community for years, and their continued success in empowering members financially makes us very proud to be working with them.”

The design on Summit’s Global Good Card depicts Abdi Lidonde, co-founder of the Beverly School of Kenya, planting an apple tree. The school is taking part in a new WOCCU program that teaches agriculture technology as part of its curriculum.
