TRAVERSE CITY, MI (April 21, 2021) —
TBA Credit Union has recently awarded four classroom improvement grants totaling $2,650.00 to local educators at Birch Street Elementary, Kalkaska Middle School, Lakeland Elementary, and Willow Hill Elementary.
Erika Corcoran, teacher at Birch Street Elementary school, received $1,000.00 to purchase decodable books for first through third grade students to read during their independent reading time. The books will allow students to practice reading skills that are taught in the classroom and will help build confidence for struggling readers.
Kalkaska Middle School Teacher, Kristina Willis, received $150.00 to fund a set of novels for students. Since students can no longer share books between classes, the funds will allow each to have their own. The novel is a high-interest and appropriate-readability book for struggling readers.
Kip Knight, a teacher at Lakeland Elementary School, was awarded $1,000.00 to help fund the school’s Morning Movement, a program that aides in reaching students through exercise. The goal of the program is to help students improve their health, ability to learn, and mood through exercise.
Rebecca Huggard at Willow Hill Elementary was awarded $500.00 to purchase a variety of supports for students that will provide movement while in the classroom. Many students who may require movement throughout the day will benefit from the supports and they will aide in keeping the students focused.
