The York Chapter of Credit Unions awards three scholarships!

YORK, PA (May 13, 2024) — On Monday, May 6, 2024, the York Chapter of Credit Unions announced the winners of its 2024 scholarship contest: Sawyer Zimmer, Shelby Vernon, and Austin Strickler. All three received $1,000 to put towards their first year of schooling.

Sawyer Zimmer is a senior at Central York High School where he is on distinguished honor roll, a member of National & German Honors Society. Sawyer is also the Percussion’s Captain in Marching Band, the Captain of the Varsity Track & Field team as well as a member of jazz band, pit orchestra and the Future Business Leaders of America. Sawyer is an Eagle Scout and volunteers at Saint Joseph Catholic Church as an altar server, at the Saint Joseph Carnival, and the Catholic Harvest food pantry. Sawyer plans to attend West Chester University in the fall, to pursue a degree in Biostatistics.

Shelby Vernon is a senior at Dallastown High School where she is a member of the French National Honor Society. Shelby is ranked in the top 10% of her graduating class and on distinguished honor roll. She is also a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, French Club, Mental Health Awareness Club, and is the Captain of the Varsity Soccer team. Shelby has fundraised for many different causes such as Pancreatic & Breast Cancer and for a teammate’s family member with Cancer. Shelby plans to attend Susquehanna University in the fall, to pursue a degree in Environmental Science.

Austin Strickler is a senior at Central York High School where he is a member of the National Honor Society and ranked #6 out of 400 students in his graduating class and is an Officer in the Math Honor Society. Austin is the Captain of the Track and Field team and was named a County All-Star on the Varsity Cross Country team. Austin is an Eagle Scout. Austin plans to attend Penn State University in the fall to major in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

“The York Chapter of Credit Unions is proud to support our Credit Union members by offering these scholarships,” said Debra Kauffman, Chapter President. “These students are our future, and we look forward to seeing them grow and prosper.”

The meeting also featured a panel discussion on how best to market to Gen Z. The night wrapped up with an overview of what’s happening in the newly reformed Lancaster Chapter of Credit Unions.
