TICONDEROGA, NY (November 13, 2014) -- As part of International Credit Union Week (October 12-18), Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union hosted three Shred Fests, three Member-Appreciation Bar-B-Ques and a free Fraud Awareness & Prevention Seminar.
Shred Fests provide a mobile paper-shredding truck at each of the Credit Union’s branches in Elizabethtown, Port Henry and Ticonderoga. The public was invited to donate non-perishable food items in exchange for free paper-shredding. In total, 10,000 lbs. of paper was shredded at the events, generating a $300 donation from the recycling of the shredded paper. The Credit Union added $600 to that amount, resulting in a total donation of $900, along with dozens of bags of food items to be divided among three area food pantries.
Over a dozen people attended the Fraud Awareness & Prevention Seminar where they received information on best practices for credit card holders and learned how to identify various forms of fraud including identity theft. The complimentary seminar was presented by Diane Vetrone, Fraud Analyst with the Credit Union’s credit card partner, Covera. The seminar was held at the Best Western in Ticonderoga at 5:30 PM on Oct. 14.
In addition, hundreds of free lunches were served throughout the week by credit union staff at Member Appreciation Bar-B-Ques held October 15-17.
International Credit Union Week commemorates the important role that credit unions around the world play in their communities. As a financial cooperative, credit unions do not pay dividends to outside shareholders. Rather, earnings are returned to their members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest rates on deposits and lower or no transaction fees.
