Tom Merfeld named Chief Financial Officer of CUNA Mutual Group

Respected Executive brings business knowledge, industry leadership

CUNA Mutual Group announced today that Tom Merfeld has been named chief financial officer for the company. Merfeld joined the company in 1994 and most recently served as the company’s chief market risk officer. He will replace Alastair Shore who held the role since 2012.

“Tom has a strong mix of industry expertise and knowledge of our businesses,” said Robert Trunzo, president and chief executive officer of CUNA Mutual Group. “He is widely respected for his leadership and commitment to helping our customers build a better financial future.”

Before joining CUNA Mutual Group, Merfeld served as the chief financial officer for Savers Life Insurance Company in Kansas City, Mo., as an investment analyst for Franklin Savings Association in Ottawa, Kan., and as an assistant economist for the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, Mo.

“Throughout his more than 20 years at CUNA Mutual Group, Tom has demonstrated clear leadership and integrity,” said Trunzo.

Merfeld holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in religious studies from the University of Iowa, a Ph.D. in theology from Marquette University, and an MBA in finance and accounting from Rockhurst University. Merfeld holds Chartered Financial Analyst, Certified Public Accountant, and Fellow of the Life Management Institute designations.

Alastair Shore served as chief financial officer, chief risk officer and chief actuary during his tenure with CUNA Mutual Group. “We appreciate Alastair’s dedication to our company and our customers,” said Trunzo. “We thank him for his contributions.”
