Turbine Federal Credit Union announces merger with Self-Help Credit Union

Mission-centered credit unions, driven by the desire to help their communities, announce December merger

DURHAM, NC (December 17, 2019) — Turbine Federal Credit Union, based in Greenville, South Carolina today announced a merger with Self-Help Credit Union (Self-Help), headquartered in Durham, NC. Turbine has approximately 2900 members and $26 million in assets. The merger was approved by both credit union boards and by state and federal credit union regulators.

Greenville Gas Turbine Employees Federal Credit Union was formed in 1976 to provide General Electric (GE) employees in Greenville, South Carolina with access to affordable financial services. It worked to create a member-owned, financial cooperative that works for the benefit of those within its field of membership. In 2015, the board of directors for the credit union officially changed the name to Turbine Federal Credit Union to position the organization for future growth. Since its inception, the credit union has expanded to serve not only the employees of GE in the Greenville area but to their contractors, vendors and family of existing members.

“Turbine and Self-Help are both mission-centered credit unions driven by the desire to help our members and the communities where they live,” states Jackie Mondora, Turbine Federal Credit Union Board Vice-Chairman.  “Working together we will be able to not only ensure members have access to the best financial services but also strengthen the services provided to the entire Greenville community.”

“This partnership helps preserve wealth and build financial security for more working families,” said Self-Help President Randy Chambers. “We are honored to build on Turbine’s long legacy in Greenville.”

Self-Help offers a full range of financial products and services including personal, vehicle, business and home loans, as well as a robust online, mobile, and audio banking system.
