Two inducted into DCUA Hall of Fame

Two outstanding credit union professionals were inducted into the Dakota Credit Union Association (DCUA) Hall of Fame during the association’s annual awards banquet which was held at the Denny Sanford Premier Convention Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on October 6, 2020.

The Hall of Fame gives recognition to individuals who have shown exceptional dedication and have given outstanding service to the credit union movement in the Dakotas. It is the most prestigious honor that DCUA bestows and celebrates an individual’s career contributions. DCUA is proud to announce this year’s inductees: Dan Cumbee, Huron, SD; and Roger Peters, Sioux Falls, SD.

Dan Cumbee retired last spring after a very successful 33-year career with Dakotaland FCU in Huron, SD. In 1987 at the age of 24, he had been hired to lead the credit union, which was burdened with a number of delinquent loans. Through working with struggling members, Cumbee learned that his calling truly was in serving members. His credit union grew to become a “Top 10” auto and mortgage lender in South Dakota, and the sixth largest mortgage servicer in the state.

His volunteer work included serving as a board member for the South Dakota Credit Union League, a board member of the South Dakota Corporate FCU, and president of the Central Chapter of Credit Unions, among others. He has also served on many community boards and served in the South Dakota National Guard for eight years.

Roger Peters has a long and distinguished record of service to the credit union industry. His career began in 1965 when he was hired as the president of John Morell Employees Federal Credit Union in Sioux Falls, SD. Over the next three decades, under Roger’s vision and guidance, the credit union underwent rapid growth and a name change to Service First Federal Credit Union. By the time of Roger’s retirement in 2009, Service First FCU had grown exponentially and today, after 86 years of service to their community, the credit union continues to flourish under the proud legacy that Roger helped to establish over his 40-plus years of service.

As a longtime credit union leader in South Dakota, he has served in nearly every leadership position possible including 10 years serving on the board of South Dakota Corporate FCU, 20 years on the board of the Sioux Valley Chapter, and 30 years on the board of the South Dakota Credit Union League.
