Underground Collision brings together packed room of emerging and legacy leaders

#FastTrack Leadership

BOULDER CITY, NV (August 13, 2019) — The Underground Collision partnered with WYCUP in the Bahamas to bring together emerging and legacy leaders at the World Credit Union Conference of WOCCU The engagement, which took place on July 30, focused discussion on how to better coach digitally savvy leaders as they rise to the top and prepare them to take the reins, as well as what legacy leaders need to know to be effective in leading them.

“The Underground Collision champions critical issues for credit unions. We truly believe in the future of the credit union movement and with that comes a powerful tug to help develop and transition the leaders of the future,” Sue Mitchell, founder of the Underground Community and CEO of Mitchell, Stankovic & Associates. “Let’s #FastTrack younger leaders who have a passion and drive that will catapult the movement forward!”

That will take some developing of our existing leadership as well, according to Lynn Heckler, Chief Talent Officer for PSCU, who keynoted the session. “Arguably nothing will impact the future of our industry more profoundly than the availability of new technology and our ability to leverage it to meet the evolving needs of credit union members,” she explained. “If we’re not already looking at how to hire, engage and lead digital talent, we could really be behind the curve.”

In line with the fast-paced, interactive vibe of Underground Collisions, colliders moved quickly from topic to topic, listening to young leaders talk about their journey, what worked and what didn’t, and how to develop the credit union leaders of tomorrow. Then, each of the tables of about six, discussed it among themselves. Here are some of the key points they made:

Laramie Plains FCU CEO Tyler Valentine: “If you want to be taken seriously, show up and be serious. If you think your organization owes you anything, you’re wrong. And take young people seriously if they’re showing up seriously. The old ‘when I was your age…’ is demeaning.”

Gisele Gomes Co-Founder Gisele Gomes: “If you want to lead, you have to foster creativity.”

Xcel FCU Board Member Stacey Walker: “We have people who are on fire for their credit union. They have a story that’s bonded them to the credit union, and every time they think, ‘why am I doing this?’, they go back to that story.”

Police FCU (UK) CEO Paul Norgrove: “We all like to hang around something good, and the credit union movement is good. It’s great, but one thing we don’t talk about enough is succession planning for the boards and training people up.”

FULM Saving House (Macedonia) CEO Eleonora Zgonjanin Petrovikj: “Consumers expect us to be in the same track as other financial institutions. They don’t care that we’re small and technology is expensive.”

CU*Answers President/CEO Randy Karnes: “At 30, the question is not how you are going to be a leader. The question is how are you going to compete until you’re 80.”

CU Solutions Group Chief Strategy Officer Brandi Stankovic: “You don’t have to have a title to be a leader. You don’t have to be young to believe in young leadership.”

The Underground Collision in the Bahamas was proudly sponsored by CU*Answers, PSCU and Ser Technology. The next Underground Collision is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019, where we will collide with Money 2020. Visit www.mitchellstankovic.com to learn more about future Collisions.
