Upcoming Go Red for Women events across Pennsylvania to raise funds and awareness for women’s heart disease prevention

Over the next three weeks, the American Heart Association will host four Go Red for Women events across Pennsylvania that are supported by PSECU, the state’s largest credit union. Held in Altoona, Bethlehem, Camp Hill, and Pittsburgh, the events are part of a nationwide movement to provide women with the tools and resources they need to reduce their risk for heart disease and stroke.

“Cardiovascular disease is the top cause of death for women in our country, causing one in three deaths each year. That’s a staggering statistic, and as an advocate of the health and vitality of the communities we serve, PSECU wants to help change it,” said George Rudolph, the credit union’s President. “Go Red for Women, the American Heart Association’s signature women’s initiative, is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women here in Pennsylvania, across the nation, and around the world. We couldn’t be prouder to serve as a sponsor of such important efforts.”

PSECU has supported the American Heart Association for several years. For three out of the four PSECU-funded Go Red for Women events this year, PSECU is the designated Social Media Sponsor, with funding and assistance supporting a social media campaign and event-specific Snapchat filters to promote awareness of the American Heart Association’s mission. In addition to sponsorship of Go Red for Women events across the commonwealth, the credit union sponsors Heart Walks in Bethlehem, Harrisburg, Lancaster, State College, and for the first time this year, Erie. PSECU also encourages its more than 900 statewide employees to raise funds and participate in Heart Walk activities. In spring 2017, the American Heart Association was also the beneficiary of the credit union’s inaugural PSECU Chips In Golf Tournament, which raised $17,311 for the cause.

“Heart disease is the leading killer of women, taking the lives of a third of our mothers, sisters, and friends. When the American Heart Association started the Go Red for Women movement 15 years ago, less than 30% of women knew that heart disease was their greatest health threat,” said Ashley Parsons, Executive Director of the American Heart Association, Capital Region Division. “Since Go Red for Women began, we’ve seen a 90% increase in the number of women who recognize heart disease as their leading health threat, and we’ve built a movement that encourages women to live healthier and influence others to do the same. Proudly snapping a Go Red selfie to share with friends is a great way to be a positive and potentially lifesaving social media influencer.”

“We encourage everyone - women and the men who care about them - to embrace the Go Red for Women cause,” Rudolph added. “Join us at one of the upcoming events or learn more at goredforwomen.org.”
