Wendy Duncan Earns $500 for Medical Lake Dollars for Scholars

100 hours of volunteering leads to more scholarship support

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA (March 28, 2018) — Wendy Duncan, one of Horizon Credit Union’s top employee volunteers, presented a $500 donation to Medical Lake Dollars for Scholars on behalf of Horizon Credit Union. She earned this donation by reaching 100 hours of volunteer time in the Horizon Credit Union Go-Givers employee volunteer program in 2017.

For Wendy, it’s all about giving back to her community and setting an example. As Horizon’s Director of Retail Services, Wendy is an active volunteer in both the credit union sphere and the Medical Lake community she calls home.

Wendy is no stranger to the Medical Lake community, she attended grade school in Medical Lake and returned when she and her husband moved back 18 years ago. Her commitment to her community is evident as she crosses paths with several organizations in her volunteer adventures.

Her connection to Medical Lake Dollars for Scholars is rooted in the many volunteer hours she has contributed to the organization since she became a board member in 2013. Following in the footsteps of her uncle, she joined the board as a way to give back to her community and support young adults pursuing their dreams.

“As DFS board members, we seek to better our community by encouraging and assisting our local students in attaining their post-secondary pursuits,” says Wendy. “Any additional financial donations I can secure help fund the scholarships we award to deserving students who are dedicated to continuing their education and realizing their future dreams.” Since 2001, MLDFS has awarded over half a million dollars in scholarships to local students.

Wendy also serves as a board member for the Spokane Chapter of the Northwest Credit Union Association where she contributes to planning for educational sessions on topics such as leadership development, legislative meetings and events that bring credit unions together to give back to the community.

Volunteering is a priority for Wendy. “I think it’s important to give back to your community in whatever way you can,” she says. While she acknowledges the value of financial contributions, she values giving time, attention and effort as well. “It also sets a good example for my kids. Most of the time when they were younger, if I was volunteering my time, they were volunteering right along with me.”

Wendy is among eight other Horizon employees who reached the 100-hour volunteer mark in the Horizon Credit Union Go-Givers employee volunteer program in 2017. The program encourages employees to engage in their communities. Volunteers that go above and beyond are awarded the chance to make a donation to a 501c(3) non profit of their choice on behalf of the credit union.
