Westerra Credit Union marks financial literacy milestone with Day of Service

Partners with Mile High United Way and GoWest Credit Union Association for “VolunTerra” 2025

DENVER, CO (May 7, 2025) |

Demonstrating its commitment to community empowerment and financial education, Westerra Credit Union (Westerra) commemorated National Volunteer Month (April) with a company-wide event dubbed “VolunTerra”. The event also marked the first anniversary of Westerra Financial Literacy, a program designed to equip students and educators with essential financial knowledge. In its inaugural year, the initiative reached more than 2,800 students and community members.

“VolunTerra 2025 brought our employees together for a day of community, collaboration and contribution,” said Kirk Leverington, senior vice president of strategy and performance excellence. “It showcased the values that drive us and the impact we can create when we work together, while giving us a chance to reflect on the success of our work over the past year. Ultimately, it served as a reminder that everything we do is for our members and the greater community.”

During the day-long volunteer event, Westerra team members assembled nearly 1,000 educator and student kits for Mile High United Way and collected several hundred personal hygiene items to fulfill the urgent needs of students at Denver Public Schools. Additionally, 267 employees participated in GoWest Credit Union Association’s “Bite of Reality” financial literacy simulation, a hands-on approach to teaching young people about real-world money management through fictional role-play.

“Credit unions like Westerra are living proof that when financial institutions lead with purpose, communities thrive,” said Sharee Adkins, executive vice president and chief impact officer of GoWest Credit Union Association. “This investment in financial education and volunteering is a powerful example of how our movement doesn’t just talk about impact — we deliver it, person by person, classroom by classroom.”
