World Series inspires bet as credit unions root for their home team

KANSAS CITY, MO and SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 21, 2014) — As the World Series competition heats up, the rivalry has inspired a bet between credit union CEOs in the opposing teams’ cities. The President and CEO of Mazuma Credit Union in Kansas City, Brandon Michaels, has accepted a challenge from San Francisco Federal Credit Union’s President and CEO, Steven Stapp.

The bet is simple, if the San Francisco Giants win, Mazuma Credit Union will send Stapp and San Francisco Federal Credit Union some of the city’s famous Kansas City BBQ sauce. If the Kansas City Royals win, San Francisco Federal Credit Union will send Michaels and Mazuma Credit Union Sourdough bread, a well-known trademark of San Francisco.

The financial institutions are also taking this opportunity to contribute to charities in the opposing communities. If the Giants take away the World Series title, Mazuma Credit Union will contribute to St. Anthony’s, a social services foundation in San Francisco. If the Royals win the series, San Francisco Federal Credit Union will donate to Spofford House, a similar social services organization located in Kansas City.

To make things even more interesting, as a former San Franciscan, Brandon Michaels may even be traveling to AT&T Park for one of the World Series games. In this case, both Michaels and Stapp may get the opportunity to further partake in a little friendly competition by meeting up in person in San Francisco.

As the World Series hysteria hits both San Francisco and Kansas City, the credit unions have yet another reason to root for their home teams. While one of the credit unions will surely be disappointed in a few weeks, the institution will at least benefit from knowing they made a charitable donation and sent a tasty meal. As the series and the bet kick off, both promise to be full of emotions and excitement.
