Relationships matter; 4 attributes of great leaders

A great manager doesn’t automatically make someone a great leader. A leader must go one big step above managing to understanding and leveraging the power of relationships.

“The best leaders take their expert management skills and combine them with people skills to become well rounded and highly successful,” writes Forbes’ Ashira Prossack. “The difference between being a good leader and a great one is in the relationships you build with your team.”

She goes on to list four key components of a great leader, including:

  1. Coaching, not directing. A good leader helps their teammates grow and develop. “They understand when they need to nurture their teams, and when they need to push them,” Prossack writes.
  2. Being adept. Great leaders understand that change is inevitable and can come at any time. They have the ability to rally their teams to make things happen – regardless of any changes that may come.
