Three tips for building a social media following

If you want to do social media well, cultivate credibility in each social media outlets, according to social media expert Gary Vaynerchuk.

Vaynerchuck, co-founder and CEO of VaynerMedia, a social media brand consulting agency, recently participated in a webinar for Marketing Cloud.

Vaynerchuck’s three takeaways are:

  1. Give way more than you ask. Provide your followers value over and over again. The best people in social media are giving all the time. That allows them to ask when the time is right.
    “You have to give before you ask,” he says.
  2. Respect the room you’re in. If you’re posting the same message, in the same way, on all of your social media accounts, you’re making an enormous mistake. Context matters. Each platform is unique.
    “Don’t use social networks to distribute content, tell your stories within them,” Vaynerchuk says.
  3. Test and learn. Experiment with different styles of messages. Keep in mind that social media platforms are ever-changing. Audiences shift, so shift with them.
    “There’s no line in the sand” for what you shouldn’t try, he says.
