Veteran’s Day 2012 has arrived, presenting us with the opportunity to once again honor veterans and current service members who risk their lives every day to keep our nation safe. What is Veteran’s Day?

Most people are aware of the Veteran’s Day holiday that comes around once a year, but are unaware of how it got started. So, what is Veteran’s Day?

Veteran’s Day was first recognized on November 11, 1918 due to World War I, also known as “the war to end all wars,” which unofficially ended when fighting ceased between the Allied nations and Germany on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Since that day, the official holiday has undergone a number of revisions with 1978 being the year that the final version was signed into law.

Currently, the holiday is nationally commemorated each year with the Veterans Day National Ceremony held on November 11th in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
