What do you pack to pursue a dream?

After living in Wisconsin almost our entire lives, my wife and I have decided to move to South Carolina. Moving across the country can be a daunting task, and packing can be overwhelming. While preparing for this major move, it got me thinking that we all make these kinds of moves throughout our lives. Sometimes the moves are physical, and sometimes they’re mental moves to pursue a dream.

There are countless lists to help us prepare for a physical move, yet what exactly do we pack to pursue our dreams? Some of the physical packing tips give us a great cross over for our dreams. Consider the following 5 tips whether it’s a physical or a mental move:

  1. Consider a Courageous Start: The beginning is a very good place to start! And every moving expert will tell you to give yourself enough time to pack properly. This will help you avoid stress and ensure that everything is packed properly. Pursuing a dream can require courage and bravery to take risks, face challenges, and step outside of your comfort zone. And starting is the first courageous step!
  2. Pack Perseverance to Declutter: For a physical move, taking time to declutter before you start packing will help you get rid of things you no longer need or want, and it will make the packing process easier. Pursuing a dream can be a long and difficult journey, and setbacks and failures are often part of the process. It’s important to have perseverance and the ability to keep going even when things get tough. Declutter your mind of preconceived notions and keep moving forward.
  3. Give Grace to Handle Anything: You know you should use bubble wrap or other protective materials to pack fragile items like dishes, glasses, and artwork. Yet we often don’t consider how fragile emotions can be when we pursue a dream. Wrapping yourself in proverbial bubble wrap may not be realistic, but having grace for yourself when things don’t go according to plan is essential to staying connected to your passion and fueling your efforts.
  4. Solicit Support to Keep Moving Forward: Using sturdy boxes that are appropriate for the items you’re packing ensures you won’t hurt yourself during your move. For example, small boxes for heavy items like books safeguards against straining your back. Pursuing a dream can be a challenging journey with lots of heavy mental lifting. It’s important to have a support system of people who believe in you, encourage you, and offer help when you need it.
  5. Rally Resources to Reach the Goal: Unlike your moves during college to score the proverbial “best apartment ever,” as adults we’re often fortunate enough to be able to consider hiring a professional moving company. They can pack your belongings for you and ensure that everything is transported safely. Pursuing a dream can also require resources such as time, money, skills, and knowledge. It’s important to consider what resources you have and what you may need to acquire to pursue your dream successfully. When in doubt, consult a coach or mentor to help you reach your goals.

Pursuing a dream can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can also be challenging and unpredictable. While pursuing a dream often requires flexibility, it’s also important to have a plan and set goals for yourself to keep you focused and moving forward.

Preparing yourself for the journey of pursuing your dream will increase your chances of success. Remember that pursuing a dream is a unique and personal journey, and what you pack may vary depending on your individual circumstances and goals.
