ATMIA publishes 2014 global ATM fraud survey

LONDON, UK & SIOUX FALLS, USA (November 25, 2014)  ATMIA has today published its 2014 global ATM fraud survey.

Respondents from 42 countries, across all major regions, took part in the survey, up from a geographical spread in the 2013 survey of 20 countries.

“In an era of globalized crime, vigilance remains the watchword for ATM security and industry in general,” commented Mike Lee, the association’s CEO.

“Increased attacks from a new range of skimming devices, including continued miniaturization, as well as on-going and geographically spreading malware and black box attacks, were notable features of this year’s survey,” Lee explained. “Criminals are developing smaller, more sophisticated electronic skimming devices.”

Lee said he was proud of the industry tightening its security solutions and applying best practices across the board.

“The number of respondents who see ATM security solutions as ‘very effective’ has gone up from 39% in 2013 to 52.7% in 2014, a credit to the industry. Also on the upside, the number of respondents who see increases in ATM attacks arising from general economic and social conditions has fallen from 51.9% in 2013 to 44.2% in 2014. Another bit of good news for the ATM security sector from the 2014 Fraud Survey is that those who are investing ‘much more’ in ATM security technology and security solutions rose from 14.6% in 2013 to 25.49% in 2014.”

ATMIA has conducted an annual fraud survey since 2011 to provide information to its Security Council to decide on production of new security best practice material or member information alerts.
