3 simple ways to save on prescriptions

If you’re on a tight budget, there may be nothing more upsetting than having to go to the doctor. A co-pay or deductible is one thing, but then you may have prescription costs on top of that. If paying for medicine bums you out, here are three easy tips to help you save…

Shop around: All drug stores were not created equally. We all probably have a preferred favorite place to get prescriptions filled (I was happy to see a local Rite-Aid turn into a Walgreen’s), but sometimes it might pay to shop around. Different stores have different prices and you may be pleasantly surprised at the prices you might get from a store you never shop at. I’ve yet to use the pharmacy at Costco, but I’ve heard great things.

Ask for generics: New medicine is great. When doctors find something new that works, it’s great for our health, but maybe not so much for our wallets. Fortunately, after a new drug’s patent expires, that’s when we start to see generics flood the marketplace. These generics tend to be a lot cheaper, so if you know a generic version is available, ask for it.

Use a discount card: If you want a discount on your prescription, you need to find a discount prescription card. The most popular option is GoodRx. Using their app, you can find the cheapest price around, so you don’t overpay at your usual pharmacy. They also offer a free drug savings card that can be used for discounts of up to 80% on most prescription drugs at the majority of U.S. pharmacies.
